Top Athlete From Each Country of the World Ever

Sports are a global phenomenon, they are popular all over the world and they can be used to unite people and connect people on stages they would not be able to access otherwise. Here are my opinions on the best athlete from each country of the world ever. The rule for this is that you actually have to be born in the country, you cannot qualify for the country if you have relatives who've descended from somewhere but you were not actually born there. The countries that will be used are from List of Countries of the World .

Afghanistan: Rohullah Nikpai

Rohullah Nikpai is a a taekwondo athlete who won Afghanistan's 1st Olympic Medal ever with a bronze at Beijing. He followed that up with another Bronze in London in 2012. When he returned from Beijing he was greeted by a crowd of thousands and received a car, house, and other luxuries at the government's expense.

Akrotiri: Graham Bell

Graham Bell is a skier who competed in 5 Winter Olympics from 1984-1998 but never medaled and sometimes didn't finished or was disqualified. He did however win a Silver in the World Junior Ski Championships in 1984. Bell competed for Britain in the Olympics.

Albania: Sahit Prizreni

Sahit Prizreni was a freestyle wrestler who competed in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics he finished 17th in 2004 and he made it to the quarterfinals in 2008. He won a bronze medal in the 2007 FILA Wrestling World Championships.

Algeria: Noureddine Morceli

Noureddine Morceli was a track athlete who was in the Olympics from 1992-2000. He had great success in the 1500 meter run of which he won Gold in the 1996 Olympics, 1991, 1993, and 1995 World Championships, 1991 World Indoor Championships, and 1993 Mediterranean Games. He set the World Record for fastest 1500 in 1992 and held in for 6 years. He set the Mile World Record in 1993 with 3:44 and held it for 6 years. He also set the 3000 meter World Record in 1994 and held it for 2 years. He won the men's Track and Field athlete of the year award for 1993-1994 and won the esteemed L'Equipe Champion of Champions Award for 1993.

American Samoa: Mike Iupati

Mike Iupati is a guard in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers. He was drafted in 2010 in the 1st Round and the 17th pick overall out of the University of Idaho. He made 3 Pro Bowls from 2012-2014 and was named a 1st Team All Pro in 2012.

Andorra: Montserrat Pujol

Montserrat Pujol is a track athlete who competed in the 2008 Olympics in the 100 meters sprint and came in 7th in her heat. She also came in 3rd in 2007 in the Games of the Small States of Europe.

Angola: Manucho

Manucho is a soccer player who plays for Rayo Vallecano. He has played for Manchester United but he did not have many successes due to the frequent injuries he suffered while playing there. He is most famous for playing on Petro Atletico where he played from 2002-2008 and scored 34 goals in 78 appearances. He has had success on the Angolan National Team as well where he scored 22 goals in 49 appearances.

Anguilla: Zharnel Hughes

Zharnel Hughes is a sprinter who won the bronze medal in the  2012 CARIFTA Games in the 100 meter sprint, he also won gold in the same event the next year. He currently holds the record in the 100 meters for the ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Championship with 10.12 seconds. He also won gold in the 2013 Junior Pan American Championships in the 100 meters. 

Antarctica: There is no records of anyone born in Antarctica

Antigua and Barbuda: Sonia Williams

Sonia Williams is a sprinter who specializes in the 100 and 200 meters. She made the Olympics in 2008 and came in 6th in her heat and did not advance to the next round. She also made the Olympics in 1996 in the 4*100 meter relay and came in 6th in the heats. She won a gold in the 1995 U17 CARIFTA games for the 100 and 200 meter run and won gold in the same events in the CAC U20 Junior Championships. 

Argentina: Diego Maradona

Diego Maradona was a soccer player who was best known for leading Argentina to win the 1986 World Cup with his 5 goals and 5 assists. His 2 most famous goals were in the quarter finals against England in which he single handedly won the game for Argentina. His 1st goal is called the Hand of God because it looks as though he hits it with his hand and his head even though the ref ruled it a goal. His 2nd goal was ranked the goal of the century by FIFA as he dribbled the length of the field past 5 defenders. He played in 91 games for Argentina and scored 34 goals. He also played for Barcelona for a few years where he scored 22 goals but the majority of his career was spent at Napoli where he had 81 goals in 188 appearances. 

Armenia: Armen Nazaryan

Armen Nazaryan is a Greco Roman Wrestler who was elected into the FILA Hall of Fame. He is a 6 time European Champion, 3 Time World Champion (2002, 2003, and 2005), he is a 2 time Olympic Champion (1996, 2000), and he was recognized as the best fighter of the year in 1998, 2003, and 2007. He also has 9 other non-gold medals. 

Aruba: Sidney Ponson

Sidney Ponson is a pitcher who pitched for 7 teams from 1998-2009. He has a career 91-113 record with a 5.03 ERA and a little over 1000 strikeouts. His best season was in 2003 when he went 17-12 for the Orioles and Giants with a 3.75 ERA.

Rod Laver is a tennis player who is often regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. He played from 1963-1976 and has a career record of 536-136, and has 200 victories. He has won all 4 Grand Slam Singles multiple times and has won many Grand Slam doubles as well. He also won the Davis Cup 5 times. He is the only player to win all 4 Grand Slam titles in 1 year twice. 

Austria : Annemarie Moser-Proll

Annemarie Moser-Proll is a skier who won 3 Olympic medals including 1 Gold in the downhill and giant slalom events. She won 4 golds at the World Championships from 1972-1978 and 2 bronzes. For the skiing World Cup she has 62 wins and 52 other podiums.

Azerbaijan: Garry Kasparov

Garry Kasparov is a chess player who became a grandmaster in 1980. He became #1 in the World in 1984 and won the undisputed World Champion from 1985-1993. He was the classical World Champion from 1993-2000. Currently he is ranked #3 in the world.

Bahamas: Mychal Thompson

Mychal Thompson was an NBA player from 1978-1991 of which he played with the Trailblazers, Spurs, and Lakers. He was the #1 pick in the 1978 draft out of the University of Minnesota by the Trail Blazers and he was on the All Rookie 1st Team that year. He was traded to the Lakers in 1987 and helped the Showtime Lakers win 2 NBA titles. He has 3 sons, 2 Mychel and Klay play professional basketball Mychel with the D-League Warriors and Klay with the Golden State Warriors, and his other son Trayce is in the White Sox minor league system.

Bahrain: Husain Ali

Husain Ali is a striker for Al Muharraq. He has played soccer since 1993 and lead the Bahraini Premier League in goals in 1998 and 2003. He also played for the Bahraini National Team from 1998-2013 and has 101 appearances and is tied for the most goals of all time with 33.

Bangladesh: Siddikur Rahman

Siddikur Rahman is a golfer who has won 2 Asian Tour events, the 2010 Brunei Open and the 2013 Hero Indian Open. He has also won 4 events on the Professional Golf Tour of India and has 1 win on the Asian Development Tour. He is nicknamed the Tiger Woods of Asia and if the Rio Olympics were today he would be the 52nd golfer in according to their rankings.

Barbados: Sir Garfield Sobers

Garfield Sobers was a cricketer who played from 1952-1974 for Barbados, South Australia, and Nottinghamshire. He has 557 career catches and his highest score ever is a 365.

Belarus: Max Mirnyi

Max Mirnyi is a tennis player who competes in singles and doubles but is much better at doubles. He has won 1 career singles title and his highest rank was #18 in the world in 2003. For doubles he was ranked #1 in the world in 2003 and he is currently ranked #47 in the world for doubles. He has 48 career doubles titles including a Wimbledon and 3 US Open's. He won the gold in mixed doubles in the 2012 Olympics.

Belgium: Justine Henin

Justine Henin is a tennis player who competed in singles and doubles but had a much better career in singles. She won 43 WTA titles and 7 ITF titles. She was ranked #1 in 2003, and has won an Australian Open, 4 French Open's, and 2 US Open's. She also won 2 Tour Finals and an Olympic Gold Medal in 2004.

Belize: Nigel Miguel

Nigel Miguel was a college basketball player for UCLA and was a McDonalds All American in 1981. He also was the Pac-10 defensive player of the year in 1985 and was a 1st team all Pac-10. He was drafted by the Nets in the 3rd round of the 1986 NBA draft and was cut by the Nets in training camp so he went to the CBA where he finished 2nd in the ROY race. The Nets signed him again but he broke his heel in training camp and he was cut again, and came back the next year for the Nets but was slower after his injury and was cut again. He went into the movie industry where he was Michael Jordan's body double, and now he owns a film company which places athletes and musicians in commercials or films.

Benin: Stephane Sessegnon

Stephane Sessegnon is a soccer player who currently plays for West Bromwich Albion. He has played with 6 different teams from 2003 to the present including for PSG where he scored 8 goals in 77 appearances. He plays for the Benin national team where he scored 51 goals in 9 appearances.

Bermuda: Shaun Goater

Shaun Goater was a soccer player who played from 1989 to 2010 for many different teams including Bristol City and Manchester City. With Bristol City he scored 40 goals in 75 appearances and with Manchester City he scored 84 goals in 184 appearances. He also played with the Bermudan National team where he scored 32 goals in 36 appearances.

Bhutan: Tshering Chhoden

Tshering Chhoden is an archer who competed in the 2000 and 2004 Olympics. She finished 54th in the individual score round so she faced the 11th ranked person in the elimination round and won but lost in the round of 32. She is the only Bhutanese archer to win a match in the Olympics.

Bolivia: Joaquin Botero

Joaquin Botero was a soccer player who played from 1997 to the present and he has the most goals for Bolivia of all time as he has 20 goals in 48 appearances. He played from Bolivar from 1999-2003 and he scored 111 goals in 132 appearances.

Bosnia and Herzegovina: Edin Dzeko

Edin Dzeko is a soccer player who has played since 2003 most notably with VFL Wolfsburg from 2007-2011 with 66 goals in 111 appearances, and Manchester City of which he has played since 2011 and he has 48 goals in 119 appearances. For the Bosnian and Herzegovinian National System with 38 goals in 69 appearances.

Botswana: Nijel Amos

Nijel Amos is a runner who specializes in the 400 and 800 meters and he won his country's 1st Olympic medal with a silver in the 800 meters in the 2012 Olympics. He also won gold in the same event in the 2014 Commonwealth Games, the 2013 Universiade Games, and in the 2012 World Junior Championships, and a bronze in the 2011 African Junior Championships.

Pele is considered the greatest soccer player in history. He played from 1956-1977 primarily with Santos but also with the New York Cosmos. In his career he scored 650 goals with 694 appearances, and with the Brazilian National Team with 77 goals in 92 appearances. He helped Brazil win the 1958, 1962 and the famous 1970 World Cup. He is Brazil's all time leading scorer, won the Golden Ball in the 1970 World Cup, he has the most career goals, won the most World Cups, he has the most hat tricks of all time, and he was named the FIFA player of the Century for the 1900s.

Tahesia Harrigan is a sprinter who specializes in the 60 meters and 100 meters and competed in the 2012 Olympics and made it to the 2nd round as she came in 3rd in her 1st heat but did not advance to the semifinals. She has also won a bronze in the 60 meters in the 2008 World Indoor Championships, and won gold in the 2006 and 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games in the 100 meters.

Brunei: Craig Adams

Craig Adams is a center/right wing who has played in the NHL since 2002. He was the last overall draft pick by the Hartford Whalers in 1996. He has played for the Carolina Hurricanes and Chicago Blackhawks and currently plays for the Pittsburgh Penguins. He won the 2006 Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes, and the 2009 Stanley Cup with the Penguins. He has 54 goals and 99 assists in his NHL career.

Bulgaria: Mariya Grozdeva

Mariya Grozdeva is a sport shooter who has competed in the Olympics since 1992. She competes in the 25m and 10m air pistol. She has the most Olympic medals in Bulgarian history as she has won 2 golds for the 25m pistols in the 2000 and 2004 Olympics and 3 bronzes for the 10m air pistols in the 1992, 1996, and 2004 Olympics. She has the World Record in the 25m pistol with 796.7.

Burkina Faso: Moumani Dagano

Moumani Dagano is a soccer player who has played with 9 different teams since 1997 primarily with Etoile Filante where he played from 1998-2003 and scored 109 goals in 181 appearances. He played with the national team from 1999-2013 and scored 31 goals in 61 appearances.

Burma: Muang Gyi

Muang Gyi is a martial artist who specializes in Bando and was the 1st person to introduce it to the USA. Bando is a form of martial arts that is similar to karate but involves weapons.

Burundi: Mohammed Tchite

Mohammed Tchite is a soccer player who has played since 2001 for 7 different teams primarily Racing Santander where he scored 24 goals in 88 appearances. He has had difficulty playing for a national team because even though he is from Burundi he didn't want to play for them even though he played for their U20 team. He wanted to play for Belgium  since he is part Belgian but was ruled ineligible by FIFA because he played for Burundi's U20 team and had switched allegiances to Rwanda even though he never played for them.

Cambodia: Khim Borey

Khim Borey is a soccer player who currently plays for Phnom Penh Crown FC and he has played for the national team where he scored 10 goals in 26 appearances. His best moment was scoring a hat trick in the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup Qualifier against Timor Leste.

Cameroon: Samuel Eto'o

Samuel Eto'o is a soccer player who has played since 1997 and currently plays for Everton. He has played with elite teams such as Real Madrid, Chelsea, Inter Milan and is most famous for playing with Barcelona from 2004-2009 where he scored 108 goals in 145 appearances. He has been successful for the national team as well as he has scored 56 goals in 118 appearances and lead Cameroon to the surprise gold in the 2000 Olympics.

Canada: Wayne Gretzky

Wayne Gretzky is the greatest hockey player of all time. He played from 1976-1999 for the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues, and New York Rangers. He was a 19 time all star from 1980-1999, he won 4 championships in the 1980's with the Edmonton Oilers. He has the most goals of all time with 894, the most assists of all time with 1963, and he has the most points of all time with 2857. He also won 9 Hart Memorial Trophy's which is hockey's MVP and it is the most of all time.

Cape Verde: Nani

Nani is a soccer player who has played since 2005 with 3 different teams but primarily Manchester City of which he has played since 2007 and has 25 goals in 147 appearances. Although he is from Cape Verde he chose to play for Portugal for his international team since he is of Portuguese descent and Portugal's team is better. For Portugal he has scored 15 goals in 83 appearances.

Cayman Islands: Paul Brown

Paul Brown is a soccer player who has played since 2010 with Future SC. He is also a member of the national team and he scored 2 goals in 4 appearances as a defender in the 2010 Caribbean Championship.

Central African Republic: Hilaire Momi

Hilaire Momi is a soccer player who played from 2007-2013 most notably with Le Mans of which he scored 2 goals in 28 appearances, but he still plays for the national team and scored 6 goals in 15 appearances including a 2 goal game against Egypt in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier.

Japhet N'Doram is a soccer player who played from 1984-1998 who was nicknamed The Wizard. He played with 4 different teams during his career, most notably Nantes from 1990-1997 of which he scored 76 goals in 173 appearances. He also competed for Chad from 1989-1997 and he scored 13 goals in 36 appearances. His best season was in 1996-1997 when he scored 21 goals in 35 appearances.

Chile: Marcelo Rios

Marcelo Rios is a tennis player who played from 1994-2004 and he became #1 in the world for 6 weeks during the 1998 season. He won 18 titles in his career and his best finish in a Grand Slam Singles Tournament was when he reached the finals in the Australian Open in 1998. He also won 1 doubles event.

China: Deng Yaping

Deng Yaping is one of the greatest table tennis players of all time. She won 4 Olympic Gold Medals (2 in singles, 2 in doubles), named World Champion 18 times, she was the #1 ranked female tennis player from 1990-1997. She did all of this before her retirement at age 24 and she was voted the Chinese Female Athlete of the Century and she was elected into the International Table Tennis Hall of Fame in 2003.

Edgar Renteria is a baseball player who played from 1996-2011 with the Marlins, Cardinals, Red Sox, Braves, Tigers, Giants, and Reds. In his career he hit .286 with 140 homeruns and 923 RBI's and 2327 hits. He was a 4 time all star and won the Silver Slugger and Gold Glove in 2003. His 2 signature moments were a walkoff single in the 1997 season which won the World Series for the Florida Marlins, and in 2010 he won the World Series MVP award with his game winning homeruns in Game 2 and Game 5.

Comoros: Hadhari Djaffar

Hadhari Djaffar is a sprinter who holds the Comorian records in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 400 meters and he competed in the 2000 and 2004 Olympics in the 100 meters. In the 2000 Olympics he tied for 67th in a place of 95 sprinters with a time of 10.68 seconds, and in 2004 he came in 55th with a time of 10.62 seconds.

Dikembe Mutombo is a basketball player who played from 1991-2009 with the Nuggets, Hawks, 76ers, Nets, Knicks and Rockets. He went to Georgetown University and was drafted #4 overall in the 1991 draft. An interesting fact about Dikembe was that while at Georgetown he was an intern at Congress and the World Bank. He was an 8 time all star, and has 1 All NBA 2nd team, and 2 All NBA 3rd team. He is a 4 time Defensive Player of the year,  has 3 All Defensive 1st Teams, 3 All Defensive 2nd Teams, He is a 2 time rebounding leader, and 3 time blocks leader. He won 2 citizenship awards, and has the 2nd most blocks of all time behind Hakeem Olajuwon. He is famous for his index figure wag at the crowd after a block because wagging at an opponent would be a technical.

Congo, Republic of the: Franck Elemba

Franck Elemba is an athlete who competes in the shot put. He holds the Congolese record for shot putting outdoors with 19.72m and shot putting indoors with 17.74. He won the bronze medal at the  2014 African Championships with a throw of 18.74.

Cook Islands: Turori George

Turori George is a boxer who competed in the 60s and 70s in the featherweight class. He had a record of 38-15-3 with 11 knockouts. He won the New Zealand Boxing Association Featherweight Title, Australasian Featherweight Title, and Commonwealth Featherweight Title. He won the bronze medal in the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games.

Costa Rica: Paulo Wanchope

Paulo Wanchope was a soccer player who played from 1993-2008 with 8 different teams. During his career he played in more than 250 matchups and scored 102 goals. He is best known for his time at Manchester City from 2000-2004 where he scored 27 goals in 64 appearances. He played for Costa Rica from 1996-2008 and scored 45 goals in 73 appearances and he is their 2nd leading goal scorer in history and currently their interim manager.

Cote D'Ivoire: Didier Drogba

Didier Drogba is a soccer player who has played since 1998 with 6 different teams and is best known for his first stint at Chelsea from 2004-2012 where he scored 100 goals in 226 appearances. He also was on the national team from 2002-2014, and captained it from 2006 to the end of his career. He also scored Cote D'Ivoire's first ever World Cup goal in 2006. For the national team he's scored 65 goals in 104 appearances.

Croatia: Davor Suker

Davor Suker was a soccer player who played from 1984-2003. During his career he scored 203 goals in 448 appearances. His greatest successes were at Sevilla from 1991-1996 where he scored 76 goals in 153 appearances. He also competed for the national team from 1992-2002 and scored 45 goals in 69 appearances. He lead the national team to a 3rd place finish in its debut World Cup as an independent country in 1998. For that World Cup he won the Golden Boot for most goals scored and he won the Silver Ball. He came in 3rd in the FIFA player of the year for 1998 and is also on FIFA's list of the 125 greatest soccer players of all time.

Cuba: Aroldis Chapman

Aroldis Chapman is a baseball player who has played with the Cincinnati Reds since 2010. He played in Cuba from 2006-2007 and went 24-19 with a 3.74 career ERA and 365 strikeouts. He defected while in the Netherlands and established residency in Andorra before moving to the USA. In his MLB career he has gone 15-16 with a 2.32 ERA and 113 saves. He threw the fastest pitch in MLB history on September 25, 2010 which was 105.1 mph, and may have thrown one 106.

Cyprus: Pavlos Kontides

Pavlos Kontides is a sailor who won Cyprus's 1st Olympic medal with a silver in 2012. He also came in 13th in the 2008 Olympics. He won gold in the 2008 World Junior Championships. In 2009 he won 2 silver medals in World Cups and a bronze in the Pan European Men's Championships.

Czech Republic: Jaromir Jagr

Jaromir Jagr is a hockey player who has played since 1990 and currently plays for the New Jersey Devils but has played with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, In his career Jagr has 714 goals and 1066 assists. He has won 2 Stanley Cups, 5 Art Ross Trophies, and a 12 time all star. He also holds the NHL record for most career game winning goals with 125, most overtime goals with 20, most assists by a RW with 149, most career points by a European born player with 1761 and many more.

Denmark: Michael Laudrup

Michael Laudrup is the best soccer player in Denmark's history he played from 1981-1998 and scored 130 goals in 479 appearances, he is most famous for playing with Barcelona from 1989-1994 where he scored 49 goals in 164 appearances. He lead Denmark to the quarterfinals of the 1998 World Cup, he is currently the manager of Lekhwiya SC of the Qatari Stars League.

Ahmed Daher is a soccer player who is Djibouti's all time leading scorer with 4 goals. He has played with KF Clirimi since 2004.

Dominica: Shane Shillingford

Shane Shillingford is a cricket player who plays for the Windward Islands and has scored over 1500 runs in First Class Cricket, he also has a 13.12 career First Class Batting Average, and his highest score is 63.

Dominican Republic: Albert Pujols

Albert Pujols is a baseball player who has played since 2001, and currently plays for the Los Angeles Angels but has played with the St. Louis Cardinals. He has a career .317 batting average, 2519 hits, 520 homeruns, and 1603 RBI's. He's won 2 World Series, 3 MVP's, he's a 9 time allstar, won 6 Silver Sluggers and 2 Gold Gloves. He's also lead the league in batting average once, homeruns twice, and RBI's twice.

Ecuador: Jefferson Perez

Jefferson Perez is a professional race walker who has both of Ecuador's Olympic Medals as he won gold in the 20 km walk in 1996, and silver in the same competition in 2008. He's won 3 Gold's in 20 km walk and 1 silver in the World Championships and set the world record in 2003.

Egypt: Amr Shabana

Amr Shabana is a professional squash player and he is currently the #3 player in the world. He held the #1 ranking for 33 months from 2006-2009. He has 31 career titles, and has made it to the Tour Finals 44 times. He's won the World Squash Open 4 times and has won 3 medals for Egypt in the World Team Championships, 2 silver and 1 gold.

El Salvador: Raul Diaz Arce

Raul Diaz Arce is El Salvador's all time leading goal scorer. He has played from 1988-2004, and has 266 goals in more than 244 appearances. He is most notable for his time at DC United where he scored 46 goals in 50 appearances. He played for the national team from 1987-2003 and he scored 39 goals in 68 appearances.

Equatorial Guinea: Eric Moussambani

Eric Moussambani is a swimmer who is notable for his notably poor finish in the 2000 Olympics. He had taken up swimming only 8 months before, He was able to compete to make it to the Olympics because of a wild card draw the Olympic committee came up with to encourage underdeveloped nations without expensive training facilities to compete. He won his heat and made it to the Olympics because both the other swimmer in his heat false started so they were disqualified. Before coming to the Olympics he had never even seen an Olympic sized pool before, and he finished his 100m heat last with a time of 1:03:97 which was the slowest time in Olympic history and even slower than the 200m World Record. Because of this he was nicknamed Eric the Eel. He is now the coach of the National Swimming Squad of the Equitorial Guinea.

Eritrea: Zersenay Tadese

Zersenay Tadese is a long distance track athlete. He won the bronze medal in the 2004 Olympics in the 10000 m to get his country's first medal. He also won the silver in the 2009 World Championships in the same event. He also holds the world record for fastest half marathon with a time of 58:23 in the Lisbon Half Marathon.

Estonia: Kristjan Palusalu
