Colts-Chiefs Recap

Colts Recap

Well it seems like after the Colts take one step forward they take two steps back. In a game where they finally have their top 3 receivers healthy, they basically have no production from two of them and that was part of the reason the Colts lost 30–14. The offensive line played awful and committed too many penalties as usual, while the defense did a decent job at stopping the run, all the Chiefs receivers were just wide open after Vontae went down. Luck took the blame for the loss as usual, but everyone knows it’s not his fault. He’s expected to be perfect, it doesn’t matter how many penalties the line commits, he’s expected to convert from wherever on the field. Yes, it’s admirable that he takes the blame, but that detracts from the fact that the offensive line doesn’t protect him.

Fantasy

Luck played just okay it wasn’t perfect but his stats definitely would have looked better if it wasn’t for some costly penalties from the offensive line. Gore was his usual aggressive self and that paid off with a great TD in the first half. TY hurt his hamstring and was basically non existent for the game. Moncrief actually looked good in his first game back from a shoulder injury so I expect him to take a larger role in the offense next week against the Packers.

Colts-Chiefs Preview

Colts Preview

The last time the Colts played the Chiefs they made a comeback for the ages and Andrew Luck cemented his status as an elite QB. However this is a different Colts team than a few years ago, and this will be a huge game in determining what kind of team they are. Luckily this week it’s looking like they will get back WR Donte Moncrief in some capacity who has been out for the past month and will be a much needed addition to their offense. Defensively they looked decent last week against the Titans so it remains to be seen whether they will be able to continue this stretch of play.

Fantasy
As usual Luck, Gore, TY, and Vinatieri are all must starters. They’ve all been having great seasons, and Gore and Vinatieri are really turning back the clock with their brilliant performances. This week I would consider starting TE Jack Doyle who had a big game last week, as Dwayne Allen is week to week and probably won’t end up playing on Sunday so Doyle should get plenty of targets.

Fan or Foe (Guest Post)

Fan or Foe

It’s easy to say, “I’m a Golden State Fan,” when your roster has Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and newly acquired Kevin Durant. It’s even easy to say, “I’m a Cavs Fan,” now that they are the reigning NBA champs lead by LeBron James.  When picking a team, many are drawn to the talent and the wins, but what if your team is the lowest ranked in the NBA?
Let’s face it, with a 2013-2014 season of 19-63 and the 2015-2016 season weeper of 10-72, the road for the Sixers could only be described as bumpier if they  lived on the moon.  Social media comments are unkind and when asked my favorite basketball team, the usual response is, “I’m sorry.”  Still, I wear my t-shirt with pride and I rejoice in my yearly trip to Philadelphia or Boston to see the Sixers play.  Why?  Because that’s what it means to be a true fan.

Fans are important to any sport.   Some fans will sit in a blizzard just to see their favorite football team live, or in the pouring rain to watch how many runs their favorite baseball team can get for the win.   Whichever the sport, the object is to win, and many fans can get pretty nasty if it’s their team on the losing side of the 50/50 odds.

I’m not saying that I haven’t uttered an insult or two at times.  It’s hard to see defense fall asleep, giving the opposing team a free pass to the bucket.  I may be guilty of saying, “Why don’t you just roll out the red carpet with a big welcome mat under the hoop.”

Guilty or not, fandom can be a very serious commitment for some.  If the season makes you want to put a blanket over your head and never look at the score again, or pray to the sports gods asking, “Why me?” , a true fan sticks by their team no matter what.   Like any relationship, a true fan embraces their team for better or worse.

Colts-Titans Recap

Colts Recap

Well it wasn’t easy and it required another superhuman effort by Andrew Luck but the Colts were able to beat the Titans 34–26. Luck finished with 353 yards 3 TD’s and no interceptions. The receiving corps was basically TY Hilton and the Hiltonettes as 3 of Luck’s main targets in Phillip Dorsett, Donte Moncrief, and Dwayne Allen were all out so Luck had to rely on guys like Erik Swoope, Devin Street, and Chester Rogers who all made big plays down the stretch. But it was Hilton who shone through with 133 yards and a TD. Frank Gore also had a decent game off his first 100 yard game as a Colt with 83 all purpose yards and a TD. Adam Vinatieri set the all time record with 43 consecutive field goals made in the game passing former Colt Mike Vanderjagt.

Fantasy
Andrew Luck, TY Hilton, Frank Gore, and Adam Vinatieri are all still must starts at this point of the season as they are all having great seasons and can be counted on solid production from week to week. I’m still unsure as to where the targets are all going to go with all the injuries but as long as Dwayne Allen is out, Jack Doyle should be continuing to be at least rosterable as he put up decent numbers this week with 78 yards and a TD

Colts-Titans Preview

Colts Preview

The Colts need a win badly. After a devastating loss in which they blew a 2 TD lead to the Texans, they find themselves at 2–4 and in the basement in the AFC South. Luckily this week they face the Titans who aren’t exactly the most formidable foe. The Colts are banged up this week with a few receivers, TE Dwayne Allen, and DE Henry Anderson down. But as long as Andrew Luck is healthy they have a chance, while their defense may blow it at the end, Luck at least can keep them in the game and is able to win games at times no matter how bad the defense tries.

Fantasy
Unless you have Andrew Luck, Frank Gore, TY Hilton, or Adam Vinatieri there is no reason to own any other Colts player. They have a ton of injuries to their offensive skill players and Andrew Luck divides up the targets often that its often very difficult to predict who will have a big game alongside TY. It could be TE Jack Doyle, could be WR Chester Rogers, or even RB Josh Ferguson. But I wouldn’t take a chance on any of those players unless you’re in a deeper league.

Colts-Texans Recap

Colts Recap

The Colts were winning 23–9 with 3 minutes to go, ESPN giving them a 99.3% chance of winning the game and they blew it. Their defense just couldn’t come through and make a stop at the end and they ended up losing 26–23 in OT. Luck played decent 252 yards a TD and a INT. Frank Gore played great, as he was the first Colts RB to rush for more than 100 yards in a game since 2012. The defense did not play well at all. There was no pass rush besides Mathis at some points, nobody could tackle and every single safety seemed to get injured. Colts really have to turn it around soon if they want to make the playoffs.

Fantasy

Luck had a solid but not great game with 252 yards and a TD. Frank Gore rushed for over 100 yards which could lead to more carries in the future. The targets were mostly shared between TY Hilton, Chester Rogers, Dwayne Allen, and Jack Doyle. Phillip Dorsett has not gotten the boost in targets expected from Donte Moncrief’s injury however Moncrief will be back soon which should lead to good things for the offense. Adam Vinatieri was Mr. Reliable and has made 41 straight field goals, one away from the NFL record.

Colin Kaepernick, Race, and Politics in America

Since I started my blog in late 2014, I've tended to stay away from the hard-hitting topics. My articles have mostly had something to do with how bad the Indianapolis Colts are, or obscure Thai golfers that nobody besides me probably particularly cares about very much. Well with all that is going on in the sports world with Colin Kaepernick and other athletes protesting the national anthem, and the political world as its an election year with two candidates with two very different visions of America, I figured that it was finally time to express my views on these things, as they are very much connected.

When I first saw the picture of Colin Kaepernick sitting on the bench while all of his teammates were standing up as the national anthem was playing, I became a little bit perturbed. My first thoughts were "Does he not respect America?", "Does he not respect the soldiers who  fight for his right to have the opportunity to be able to play football?" The primary thing which really made me angry though was with the fact that the way he was sitting it didn't seem like he was even acknowledging the anthem being played. But while I was angry, I was also intrigued. There had to be a reason why he was doing this, and as I soon learned, there was.

In an interview with NFL Media Kaepernick said "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color."..."To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies on the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

I was very aware of the many times in which unarmed African Americans were being killed by police officers. African Americans have been killed at traffic stops, killed when they were selling CD's, along with many other truly tragic instances. For Colin to use the reason that he was frustrated at the fact that unarmed African Americans were being killed and nothing was being done about it was commendable in my eyes. I truly believe that in America as a nation we do not treat minorities, specifically African Americans who have a long history of injustice towards them in the United States with the respect that they deserve. There is still discrimination in many parts of the country, and while we have gotten better there is still some ways to go for total equality between African Americans and whites. While I still was a little bit angry that Colin chose to sit for the anthem, I now understood the reason why he did this and lauded him for protesting social injustice which I think athletes should do as they have such a big medium.

The biggest thing which changed my attitude towards Colin Kaepernick's is that he changed his protest from sitting for the anthem to kneeling for the anthem. While this may be a small change to some people, to me it was a huge change. Now Kaepernick was actually protesting in a way that actually acknowledged the anthem being played and was doing it to promote necessary social change. While I still choose to stand for the anthem, I completely respect Kaepernick's decision to kneel as a way to protest the way African American's are still being treated.

Since Kaepernick has started protesting many other football players have joined in on his protest. His teammates Eli Harold and Eric Reid have joined him in kneeling, as well as other players around the league such as Arian Foster and Kenny Stills of the Dolphins, and Brandon Marshall of the Broncos (who himself has lost many endorsements because of his protest. Antonio Cromartie did kneel when he played with the Colts for the first few weeks of the season, however he was cut last week leaving some to speculate whether it was because of the fact that he was kneeling or because of his poor play at cornerback. In addition many football players such as the 49ers Antoine Bethea, the Titans Jurrell Casey and Jason McCourty, and the Rams Robert Quinn to name a few, have stood for the national anthem locked arms with their teammates and raised their fist in the air which is the symbol of unity, strength, and defiance to show support with those kneeling. This is reminiscent of John Carlos and Tommy Smith's protest during the 1968 Summer Olympics. Since these protests have started, there has been less shooting of unarmed black individuals by policeman, however there is not the truly impactful social change that Kaepernick and others may have been hoping for with their protest. The fact that now we as a society are at least having a conversation about it and that it has lasted through multiple news cycles is a great start, and hopefully will lead to improvement in race relations in the future. What will be interesting to see is if any white NFL players will join in on the protest, so far it has been all African American players and if a white player were to join I think it could have a huge impact in how big the protest could get.

About a month ago Patriots DE Chris Long expressed his feelings on Kaepernick's protest, and while he said some very very interesting and thought provoking things in the interview there's one quote in particular that stands out to me. "And I respect the anthem. I would never kneel for it. We all come from different walks of life and think differently about the anthem and the flag and what that means. But I think you can respect and find a lot of truth in what those guys are talking about and not kneel." What Long is saying of which I totally agree with, is that as a white male, he cannot even fathom the racism that Kaepernick and other African Americans have faced throughout their lives, so who is he to judge what is an appropriate form of protest or not. As I see it, Kaepernick's protest is 100x more impactful than the violent protests in cities like Ferguson, Baltimore, or Houston because of the fact that its nonviolent. His protest is not physically hurting anyone, and the only violence associated with it are the horrible death threats that he's been receiving. I don't know how much longer Kaepernick's career will last, as he is not performing to the level that he once was under Jim Harbaugh, and he will probably end up being blacklisted by the rest of the NFL because of his protest. I really hope Colin's career doesn't end similarly to Mahmoud Abdul Rauf's who also protested the national anthem because of the fact that he believed that the United States flag was a symbol of oppression and tyranny and conflicted with his Muslim beliefs. In his final season in 2000 he lead the league in field goal percentage but was not re-signed, and tragically a few years later his house was burned down.  But I do know that when all is said and done history will remember Kaepernick as someone who valiantly kneeled for what he believed in.

With the Kaepernick situation and our political arena today, one key theme has emerged and that theme is that for many people who are on opposite sides of an issue or situation have a complete inability to empathize or sympathize with one another. This is why I mentioned Chris Long and what he said earlier, as a white football player he has not lived as an African American and cannot speak about what it is like to experience racism. While he may have a difference of opinion for himself personally, he is able to recognize that different people have experienced different things in their lives and may have a different opinion on an issue than he does. We do not have enough people like Chris Long in America today and that is why as a country we are so divided. It is very important that we recognize that no two Americans have had the exact same life experiences. People's life experiences shape their values and opinions on the issues, so it's reasonable to assume that not everyone is going to have the same views on every issue. A Southern Catholic farmer is not going to have the exact same experiences as a Syrian immigrant will, so they probably will have different views on issues. I'm not advocating for everyone to have the same view on every issue either, disagreement and ideas getting challenged is very healthy for the existence of our democracy. The problem that we have run into (and both those on the left and those on the right are to blame for this) is that both the two political parties are moving in the opposite direction. The Republicans say that their platform is "the most conservative platform ever,"and the Democrats say that their platform is "the most progressive ever."Well that's not very helpful if you want to get legislation accomplished. Neither Democrats nor Republicans can seem to acquire the ability to recognize that while they may disagree on the issue there isn't some common ground that they can use to get something accomplished and the stagnancy is hurting Americans. This brings me back to Colin Kaepernick, neither the politicians on the left nor the right are willing to acknowledge any positivity about Kaepernick's protest. Recently Supreme Court judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg even said that it was "dumb and disrespectful". These politicians know that unarmed African Americans being killed is part of a larger issue of race relations in America. They know that we would not be in the position that we are in today with the strides that we've made in equality in the past 50 years if MLK and other African Americans didn't peacefully protest. In an era in which so many athletes are getting in trouble for doing things that they most definitely shouldn't be doing, it's nice to see an athlete using his platform to advocate for social change to make the world a better place.

Colts-Texans Preview and Prediction

Colts Preview

After an 0–2 start the Colts come into this week’s game against the Texans having won 2 of their past 3 games and have a chance to take the division lead with a win. Andrew Luck has started off the season with a bang as he has a 10 to 3 TD to INT ratio. TY Hilton and Frank Gore have also played great to begin the season as TY has 3 straight games with a TD and Gore has at least 3 games with 70+ all purpose yards. To beat the Texans, the defense needs to greatly improve from last week, as the Texans will run and pass all over the Colts and most likely win as they have much more talent than the Bears did.

Fantasy
There are 3 Colts who are must starts for this week. Andrew Luck who has been on a tear this year, TY Hilton who has historically dominated against the Texans, and Adam Vinatieri who had a monster game against the Bears and has been the definition of perfection. I’d consider starting Gore as a flex but only in deeper leagues as the Texans have good run defense. The Colts don’t really have a second option that they go to consistently in the passing game as the targets have been going to a combination of Dwayne Allen, Jack Doyle, Phillip Dorsett, Quan Bray, and Chester Rogers. None of these guys are that fantasy relevant at the moment.

Prediction: Colts 32 Texans 27

Colts-Chargers Recap

Recap-Indianapolis Colts

It wasn’t easy and it wasn’t nearly as dominant as it should have been but the Colts were able to beat the Chargers 29–23 for their 2nd win of the season. Andrew Luck was able to put the Colts on his back and complete his 16th 4th quarter comeback in his career. TY Hilton dominated the Bears secondary with 171 yards and a TD, and Adam Vinatieri was his usual dominant self with 5 FG’s. The defense and the offensive line played very poorly in this game. Andrew Luck was sacked 5 times and pressured into making bad throws a good amount of times as well. The defense could not stop Jordan Howard at all during the game whether it was on the ground or in the air, and Patrick Robinson struggled guarding WR Cameron Meredith and seemed to give up big play after big play. The only reason why the Colts didn’t give up more TD’s is the Bears committed too many penalties to get themselves close enough to the end zone.

Fantasy
Andrew Luck had a monster day as he threw for 322 yards and two TD’s and no turnovers. He’s done a great job of cutting down on his turnovers this season and so far as a great 10–3 TD-INT ratio. TY Hilton had 171 yards receiving and now has a TD in 3 straight games. Frank Gore had 79 all purpose yards and passed Jim Brown for 9th all time on the all time rushing yards list. Dwayne Allen, Phillip Dorsett, and Quan Bray all contributed to the passing game however I’m not sure I’d roster them except in the deepest of leagues. Adam Vinatieri had a season high 5 FG’s and is definitely a must start at kicker.

Colts-Bears Preview

Colts Preview

After that appalling loss to the Jaguars in London last week, the Colts took inventory and cut two of their defensive starters CB Antonio Cromartie and LB Sio Moore. In addition Art Jones will be coming back from his suspension this week so the run defense should be getting a much needed boost. There are rumors that the Colts will be using the hurry up offense a little bit more against the Bears this week as it seems to be the only way the offense has been working the past few weeks so I expect Andrew Luck to throw more earlier in the game. The Bears defense is doing about as bad as the Colts defense is this season so I expect a very high scoring game and the Colts offense to finally go back to its solid Week 1 performance.

Fantasy Impact
Even with all the drops by receivers and poor offensive line performance, Andrew Luck is still having a pretty solid season with 8 TD’s and only 3 INT’s so he is a good start this week against the Bears. Frank Gore is having a very good season and is still a solid RB2 or flex play even as he moves into his upper 30’s. The only Colts receiver probably worth rostering is TY Hilton as he’s the only one guaranteed consistent production as Jack Doyle, Dwayne Allen, and Phillip Dorsett (who however did in fact catch a TD for his only reception last week) probably are not worth keeping on your roster.

Prediction Colts 42-Bears 35

Colts-Jaguars Recap

Recap-Indianapolis Colts

Well it looks like playing in America isn’t the cause of any of the Colts problems as they basically played the exact same game they usually do in London in their 30–27 loss to the Jaguars. They get down a lot at the half and have to throw the ball a lot in the second half and just about make a comeback only to lose at the end. Drops seemed to be the problem this week as Dwayne Allen, Josh Ferguson, and Chester Rogers all had drops on third and fourth down that could have changed the momentum of the game. The defense did not play well and the secondary committed many unnecessary penalties. While I am optimistic about the rookies on the offensive line, they did not play well at all and Luck was forced out of the pocket or sacked on many plays. Luck himself did not play awful, his only interception was on a tipped pass as soon as he threw it. With this loss it seems as though the seat is getting warmer for Grigson and Pagano.

Fantasy Impact
Luck started off slowly but finished with a respectable line of 234 yards and 2 TD’s and 1 INT. Frank Gore had another solid game with 95 all purpose yards and a TD. TY Hilton and Phillip Dorsett both were able to get TD catches against the Jacksonville secondary. The Colts TE’s Dwayne Allen and Jack Doyle were not able to get as much production as in previous weeks as they had 3 catches for 26 yards combined. Mr. Reliable Adam Vinatieri stayed perfect on the season with two field goals and three extra points.
